Cogat Sample Questions Third Grade

a secluded retreat in the intestinal microvilli any human being, a group of bacteria produced by mitosis just gather around another, larger, plagadada cilia. Lies away from the pack. The "young" jump around, urging me to tell stories that both have heard other Gastrocomunidad bacteria.

- Come, let us know! We know things, everyone says that you know more about bacteria than anyone else! Come, come! - Cry out in unison, shaking their small cilia.

bacteria
The great sighs, resigned, and fits between the mucosa. The small stand in a circle, eager for knowledge. And they start stories.

"Okay, but I will tell you only a couple of things, right? Long time ago that you divided, and by now you will know full well that we are bodies constituted by a single cell, and that we live within a much larger bodies and complex, made up of thousands of cells, and they call themselves themselves "human beings" and we "bacteria." The wisest of human beings have for years been giving names to things and beings of their world, and therefore we have been renamed to distinguish ourselves from all other relatives who have, Escherichia coli.

Young Restless bacteria moved. The beginning history were finding it very interesting, because they knew (about) all that. He became aware of it.

- But I do not think that you may know, is that besides being a vital protagonists of the biology of these beings, who benefit from our work as we can live in its comfortable interior, our race has played a major role in the development of human science, in its ability to investigate their own physiology to combat the disease and to unravel the mysteries of other living beings who live with him in his world.

The audience was petrified, things got interesting.

- The first humans to decipher the mysteries of the genetic code and the molecular basis of life, needed a way to "play" with these molecules. Given its inability to handle the world on a microscopic scale, soon needed help. And here we come: our constitution as unicellular organisms, and our innate ability to absorb foreign DNA molecules and proteins on a large scale production, we became the ideal candidate: it took only a few years to develop techniques that allow them to enter DNA within us. Our easy to reproduce so quickly - if environment is rich enough and the right temperature - make us small protein factories, as we artificially introduced genes are translated by our own machinery. After a purification process in which our thick cell walls are broken and all content within us separately carefully, humans obtain material for their research.

general might feel a jolt similar to the description of genocide. one of the small bacteria began to tremble visibly.

- Oh, calm, fear not - calmed the old bacteria, pleased with the effect of his talk - anything can happen while we are in the interior of these beings. These bacteria are relatives I talk to us, but are themselves genetically modified, so that humans can control who grows in his hands and who is not. In fact, if any of you came by accident to one of the plates where humans grow our fellow sobreviviríais not even a division. These plates are sprayed with antibiotics, harmful substances that impede our growth. Only the genetically modified bacteria to resist those antibiotics grow there, and these bacteria are only those that have managed to introduce foreign DNA into their cellular machinery. This will ensure they are working only with the appropriate bacteria.

E. Bacteria coli transformed with a plasmid DNA which contains the gene for ampicillin resistance were seeded in separate culture plates with embedded agar ampicillin on the left, a handle was used as a seed pen, on the right, the bacteria were seeded evenly over the plate, and then wrote the word with a loop dipped in chloramphenicol, an antibiotic to which bacteria have no resistance genes (actually, the lyrics are distinguished by the mark on agar, the antibiotic released since then and can see a fairly broad halo where the bacteria do not grow).

Among the audience, suddenly, a small forward bacteria. He seemed restless, as if to say something.

- Tell me, son, what worries you - you said the old bacteria.

The little brighter, finally:

- see, is that .. I have also heard stories about bacteria that are capable of changing its resistance to antibiotics, and can grow in media they could not before.

The old bacteria was pleased. He liked his listeners to participate in their stories.

- Very good, small, that's a very astute observation. You see, that's not entirely wrong, but should be better explained. It is true that sometimes, bacteria that were resistant to some antibiotics, suddenly they are. But that does not depend on the decision itself of bacteria, nothing further. Bacterial populations are heteogéneas, is genetic variability between us, despite reproduce by mitosis. There phenomena transfer of genetic material, and some strains can incorporate genes that previously did not have. The use of antibiotics is making it artificially selected, so humans are reluctant to apply their sick too many antibiotics. In their ignorance, many fall into the same error as you, and think that bacteria on a voluntary basis "learn" to fight cocntra antibiotics in some way. None of that is something as simple as that survive only individuals who already are tough. Due to our rapid growth, any change in our genetic material (either by mutations produced spontaneously or by gene transfer between strains) can become dominant if there exists a Continuous antibiotic that kills "competitor" that do not show such resistance. We do not have free will, how we could! We are just a tiny cell, devoid of nervous system. Not to be, we have no core ...

The little bacteria still not feel satisfied. He waved a pair of flagella impatient and kept asking, without a hint of shame as any:

- But then, what we're here talking to us, and we know all these things?

This time the old bacteria took time to respond. Decided to terminate his conversation with the biggest and most worrisome of the explanation.

- Oh, small, how innocent you are. The answer is quite simple, and again we must use humans to explain. With all their accumulated knowledge and skills are still very limited, and must rely on artificial tricks to keep learning and especially to pass on their knowledge. Just as almost unconsciously assume that people around them use human qualities that they do not possess - as in the case to imagine that evolutionary processes are managed by the agencies themselves at will - very few are able to explain to his fellow phenomena its scientists discover biological. Therefore, they must resort to tricks like the one in question, whereby write stories like that I'm telling you, and endow their characters human qualities such as speech and thought. Not to mention another group of humans who prefer to go directly to the invention of superior beings of great power to explain everything for what we have not found an explanation ...

But that is another story, another day I will tell you: it's time for you to get down to work. We must do our part to work on the absorption of nutrients in this area, or being in which we stayed cease to be warm and comfortable. Stories would end forever, and do not want that, right?

All bacteria released a resounding "No!" in unison, and scattered microvilli, prepared to perform those functions as their relatives, growing comfortably in beds nutritious agar in incubators at 37 º, had almost forgotten.

How Do You Read Dimensions

The mystery pink body

That morning started one morning as a cold November. Nothing could make me imagine the horrors that confront me later, as naively entered the compound housing my usual workplace. Because although many human beings are of knowing the future and their avatars, is far from the hand of man to know the mysteries of the universe, and bold are those who, like me, challenge the cosmic horrors that lurk in seemingly events most insignificant. Would regret my naivete and arrogance later scientific curiosity, but as I say, that morning I went to my lab unconscious and happy, happy as only an ignorant can be.

Once attired with appropriate laboratory clothing (snow-tight gown and gloves), I went to the incubator at 30 ° where a couple of days ago had placed a petri plates, seeded with a new strain yeast. But my serenity was suddenly embarrassed to discover that the yeast had grown, yes, but their color was not expected, between white and ocher was rather a seemingly unnatural pink. Disturbed and surprised, I turned to my companions, who reassured me that this color was normal in this strain. Quieter, yet still refusing to plunge with such ease, such a fact, and tried to inquire about the ultimate reason to explain that color.

Yeasts roses up in solitary, down compared with a strain of color "normal."

Nobody could (or wanted) to explain such an aberration. A yeast changed the color was something that went against everything he knew, and could not rest until the mystery unravel. So I looked into it night after night, looking lost and volumes in libraries banned, among the most arcane knowledge, until we find the solution to the mystery. Among the pages of Googleomicrón discovered that the bodies with which so happily worked many surprises hidden in the genome.

scientist's pride knows no bounds in their zeal to control the development of the organism is subject to their plans, alter the basic patterns of metabolism for more tracks progress of their experiment. It was not enough to eliminate the genetic capacity of yeast to metabolize histidine, tryptophan, leucine or uracil , doing so only grow those included in its genome an exogenous plasmid introduced by the researcher, in addition, they are deletion one of the genes involved in the synthesis of adenine . Adenine, no less! The reader of biology earthling concoedor know that adenine is neither more nor less, one of the constituents of nucleic acids store genetic information and the cornerstone of all terrestrial biology. To make matters worse, it is also the origin molecules such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) molecules that exemplify the basic energy currency and reducing power cell, respectively. However, these strains require adenine for growth supplement, they can not synthesize it themselves. But this did not answer my question, why the pinkish color? I had to find out more and more, searching to find the answer. And the answer came to me, apparently for chemical formulas.

Chemical structure of adenine

After arduous My research came to the relationship between gene deletion in yeast and the adenine synthesis pathway, and with it, the answer to my question. The genes encode proteins, and these proteins act in sequence on the substrates regulated chemicals that form the final metabolites. Simple chemicals combine and react with others, through the action of proteins known as enzymes, to give rise to compounds that perform very different from those that may have the original molecules. Adenine in yeast, in particular, is originated from a molecule called phosphocreatine ribosyl pyrophosphate, in a series of reactions catalyzed by at least seven different enzymes.

Before that adenine is formed as such, has the form of phospho-ribosilaminoimidazolcarboxilato (CAIR), and before that, of fosforibosilaminoimidazol (AIR). The protein that catalyzes the passage of AIR to CAIR (encoded by the gene ade2) is missing in strains that troubled my mind. As a result, the road is blocked and accumulates in large quantities AIR. Finally, the ultimate revelation: the middle, when oxidized, produces a pink color. At last! The mystery revealed! Yeasts are pink as a result of the oxidation of an intermediate accumulated in the adenine synthesis pathway, interrupted by human hands. The mechanisms by which the AIR or any of its oxidized forms produces pink, and saturated beyond my mind. But it was enough to glimpse the implications that most basic chemistry might have to influence the genetics of organisms, and finally their external morphology.

The route of adenine in Saccharomyces cerevisiae .
(Composite from here and here )

Can the reader imagine the impact such a revelation came upon me and punished psyche. Finally, the most basic chemistry explains the color of an entire organism. I could not believe it. The implications were so big, so scary ... I did not hesitate a moment to apply this knowledge to research on human beings. Because the evidence was clear: the race of people inhabiting the Levantine coastal cities, those beings who hold almost unnatural pinkish, can only be mutants with completely altered their metabolism. Hence my fateful obsession with capturing several of these strange creatures, and my subsequent confinement within these walls padded, where day in and day out trying to make me believe that I'm away from sanity. My colleagues thought crazy, and soon complain to the authorities when they found in my lab notes various sketches, maps of the towns of Benidorm and Gandia, and plans to capture human specimens with which to compare my recent hypothesis. The poor ignorant

are happy, playing with their yeast and other microbes, unaware that driving forces beyond all comprehension, laws dominating not only the microbes, but which govern the biology of entire planets ...

Chemistry has opened the doors. Only fear what awaits me through it.

Customize your thesis!

The more astute followers of the blog would notice the change suffered aesthetically given time. Was pending write a post explaining the change, and finally decided to wait until today's date as it fulfills exactly two years since he defended his doctoral thesis server. And they will have to see the cartoons from the bottom of the blog with my dissertation? Then you will have to keep reading to find out. And if you are not interested, then you are going to another blog that is a can ... not! Do not go, it was hard to gather a group of regular readers!

Figure 1. central image of the cover tesil. The active site of three phosphatases different line and a phospho-tyrosine dephosphorylate point (for how phospho-tyrosine was there, see back in Figure 2).

All those engaged in the issue of doctors know about how important it is usually this time. Of course, as we all have opinions and ass, the pleasure of "reading" the theory also depends on each and every one, but in general is widespread it is a time of celebration and in many cases is compared with a bodorrio (as we discussed on this occasion ). It is also quite true that for the more vocational, maudlin or simpletons, entire period of the thesis is equivalent to something like the military do. This last remark made me Alfie partner, outside (but close) to the world of research, when I heard about my fellow thesis almost like my brothers. It is quite true, at least in my case, it was a time of great, to meet interesting people, make good friends, do challenging work and travel and see some of the world. Therefore, the illusion of top it "creating" something special seemed inevitable.

For those unfamiliar with the scientific world should know that far from the ease and humor with which we tackle the issues this blog scientific and playful, the world of literature is very serious, cold and calculating (come on, have to be). It was a challenge for me, much given to winding and volatile imagination, simply write a set of facts and observations from the objectivity and reliability. But fortunately, there was hope.

It also allows, within this seriousness, a certain flexibility in preparing the merely "aesthetic" of the thesis. It is therefore possible that apart from the cold and concise writing results, season with a billet inspirational phrase (for example), or with a cover artistically relevant or even to denote something of the personality of the author. This is where I completely lost the papers, and I determined at all costs to do a thesis work was recognized as well as mine and nobody else. Thanks to have a very understanding boss and also a friend of artistic expression, found a way to leave my mark on the covers ( Figures 1 and 2) and in each of the chapters ( figure 3). This not only wanted to pay tribute to the scientific process of research, but my greatest passion, the profession that a boy always wanted to develop and eventually discarded to devote to a career something more serious (oh, how naive era). Of course I'm talking about comics, and in fact what happened was that I realized that besides a lot to like comics, you had to draw that you shit. But hey we do not stray: I show below a collage I made by mixing the illustrations accompanying each chapter, with its corresponding sentence. The game that you can make is to associate each picture / sentence with the corresponding section of the thesis (in the collage not respecting the original order). To see who is right all (the solution by clicking on the button).

Figure 2. Back tesil. An ancestor of Batablanca and history of other inhabitants of this our blog jumps of protein-protein until a structural alignment in which to deposit its cargo, the phospho-tyrosine.

Figure 3. collection of illustrations and quotes that accompany each chapter of the thesis. One of them did not correspond to any chapter, but closed the volume.

From left to right, starting from the top row:

1 - INTRODUCTION
2 - OBJECTIVES
3 - MATERIALS AND METHODS
4 - DISCUSSION
5 - CONCLUSIONS
6 - RESULTS
7 - PUBLICATIONS
8 - BIBLIOGRAPHY
9 - FINAL cartoons

As he had long wanted to customize your blog, I felt like a quick fix and involving little work using these cartoons and hechos.Creo that fit well, but good is your opportunity to say in the matter.

If that bit you appeared, attached to the copy of the thesis presented a CD with an interactive menu from which you could access content "official" (pdf version, copies of articles, links to web pages and relevant databases ...) and a section of "extra content" which included a couple of particular texts (the real history of this blog and the adventures of Batablanca ) , a comic strip parodying the final moments of thesis writing, and any other similar surprise.

Before you consider that I am crazy and daring transgressor, know that no further than one of my friends who read about months earlier, also customized his thesis, included photos of their favorite mountains, and to round off a photo of himself reading a Nature Reviews on Cancer hung in the middle of a road. Yes, what he was climbing, not comics, how did you guess?

should be noted that there is another method of preparation of thesis, titled "for articles", in this case, if enough has published articles in the doctoral period, some universities allow the thesis to be published in summary, attaching these items. That is less cumbersome, but also less personal. In the case of my university this option was not possible, and although some results were already published (in fact, to date we are still awaiting acceptance Finally an article that lists the latest results tesiles), Curran had the billet.

Finally, I dedicate this post to all who are in terrible point of discouragement which usually takes place at different times between the beginning of writing and defense of the thesis. There is often no time or inclination to waste time with such nonsense, but it's also good to know that you can create something a bit more personal without sacrificing the rigor and seriousness implicit in the work. Let everyone decide their way to close this quarter, but please do not closeted in a repetitive and exhaustive formulas formal rules. That science in itself it is quite tedious in many cases.

And a special dedication to the copepod friend, who is in the final stage and is already a little to the very. Told him when we saw this Christmas as the number of cartoons and nonsense that I included in the thesis, and was perplexed and phosphorylated equally. Was another reason I moved to turn this into a post.

UPDATE: The article you mentioned, with the latest results tesiles, just accepted today (27 February 2011), by a hair I do not fit the second anniversary celebration! Anyway, better late than ever.

Congratulations, Mr. Darwin. Breaking

202 years ago today (which number more beautiful) who was born our friend Charles R. Darwin, a man of capital importance in the history of science that needs no introduction by now. Regular readers know that show devotion to this great naturalist and his discoveries, and are not seldom that we have honored . But the anniversary is the anniversary, so once again I dedicate to such an eminent figure this particular card. For the more tradition still tradition, this year has caught me just as abruptly as above (in both cases the drawing made was unable to take the time necessary for a more dignified development), and if this were not enough, I pulled hand over shameless self-reference. This is what has egoblogoirrelevancia , folks.

Click to read better, because what is seen, not going to see much better.

Congratulations, Darwin!

How To Open My Vip Suitcase Number Lock

Philippe Petit in 1974 challenged the same time, for 45 minutes and with a single action, the laws of New York City, common sense, friendship and severity. A feat, a madness, an act of rebellion. A little of everything, all at once. Those who lived at the time this event could feel something strange, different, indefinable, a mixture of awe, admiration, fear. Petit's feat caused a cluster of sensations that hatch on its viewers in many different ways, choosing to disregard in some cases and to the total admiration in others. Thirty-seven years later, this cluster of feelings is able to reawaken in people like me have the chance to live hand experience of director James Marsh and his incredible documentary film Man on Wire .

Released in 2008 and based on the book's own Petit To Reach the Clouds, says swiftly, through the testimony of his own players (and Weird drama), planning and execution of the deed on (among, rather) the Twin Towers of World Trade Center . In the course of this story know how the project was conceived from the beginning (A schedule worthy of a good scientific experiment), and assist in disbelief, a creative process out of all the artistic "people." Philippe manages to create original paintings in motion, its image, a fierce look, all concentration, moving slowly through an almost invisible line joining two towering structures (the towers of Notre Dame in Paris, the Sydney Harbour Bridge ) and carrying a very long rod, can not remain indifferent. The challenge turned into something tangible. These images, including a series of stills, seasoned with the sublime songs of Michael Nyman and Josh Ralph, stir well as the history of the man whose dream is impossible, unthinkable, senseless, but not stopped trying to make it happen. An inspiration to anyone who has ever wanted anything in life.

A master balance, did stumble a few hours the fragile balance of conservative and submissive American society, which took longer to understand what moved the man to do something similar.

almost forty years ago Philippe Petit proved that even the wildest dream can be performed. That the mere fact of having no purpose, no apparent reason, no justification (the danger and the many risks that outweighed stunt the potential reward ... personal satisfaction? Some pictures bold?). From that crazy idea developed something big, very big. Symbolic. I never thought that a person walking on a steel cable could be considered art. But on the sofa in my house, watching TV, I excited seeing the same man leap from the chair moved, remember to look down from a height of 450 meters, where no man has come to be (and again, value added to the achievement and images) just by the mere fact of saying "I do that, not going to let me do it, but I'm going to do." He knew he did not hurt anyone, that would break rules that could only hurt him, and that all who chose to participate were free at all times to let it go, not to interfere. Many

esperaríais put me to ramble about the physical implications of the challenge of the tightrope walker, from a scientific standpoint. One could speak at length, and no doubt seeing the documentary is fascinating how you can master your own center of gravity with simple tricks. But the impression the film made me was higher compared to the feeling of rebellion - a rebellion almost innocuous, but absentia after all - which follows the story. I think a lot lately that we are living a kind of illusion of freedom, it seems that we have been convinced that the protest is not a feasible way, we show violent anti attacking the police and make us believe that there is no more peaceful, more safe, more effective protest when something happens around us we do not like.

From the same couch in my house every day I see injustice in the world I live. It is not very different from Philippe. We could say that is more advanced, technologically superior, more democratic, more free. But every day we see around us clues that it is not. That we have won in some ways as it receded in others. We lost a lot more because we do not know what we can do or not, against whom shall we go when we complain. Which rules can be broken, what values \u200b\u200bare worth defending, who benefit from our "rebellion." Philippe also rebelled against anything or anyone in particular, just felt I needed to do something and that something, that would be dangerous or illegal, it was worth because he did not hurt anyone. Obviously, one could argue if this feat was actually quite safe, if you can break a rule set simply because we do not make sense. And therein lies the question: if we are so convinced (I tend to be) that the laws and rules are unbreakable and necessary to build a stable and just society ... To what extent can we change this society when clearly something is wrong?

I can not draw a conclusion from all this I can only say that Philippe Petit decided he wanted to cross over a wire between the Twin Towers, and he did.

And I, day after day, I sat on my couch.

Do Cervical Polyps Hurt

balance Motivating the girl

few days ago I read in Hominids this cartoon, funny and full of reason

Which got me thinking (absurdly, of course) until you reach a conclusion: there is no need . I mean, you do not tell the kids that someday could be mounted on a T. rex to come to them wanting to pursue science. Come on, that is fine, as is well modeled scientists put tape players more or less sensitive to the public (remember the Dr. Brown and his DeLorean able to travel back in time , or young Peter Parker of comic able to make their own lanzarredes), but examples of real science, pure and simple, can themselves be very bright and funky without the need to exaggerate. I will proceed to list a number of scientific words in my childhood I have been a singular flight of fancy, attracted both by its sound as the implications for a child's mind can have. Are terms, as I say, that in my daily work as normal operation and if they had told me I'd be excited enough kid:

- cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen (each Once you thaw cells, I feel a little T800 )
- X-ray Crystallography
- Tagging proteins with radioisotopes (includes handling Geiger counter)
- Silencing gene expression
- directed mutagenesis
- mass spectrometry

and could put many more, of course, things like X-rays (or gamma recall the origin of Hulk , no less) are common in film and comics of times past and present. The idea I want to convey is that sometimes I feel like a science fiction movie when I say "I will reveal the outcome of two-dimensional electrophoresis," "reached by the mass spectrometer samples?" or when they ask what you're doing, say "well look, I'm analyzing the dimerization of this protein by non-denaturing gel electrophoresis, to determine whether the mutations found in patients are due to a loss of function, inability to interact with their substrates or simply to a hyperactivation of the path of the ubiquitin-proteasome. It seems that at any moment is going to blow a tube and some of those present at the laboratory will become a monstrous, or they will call the Pentagon to ask us to use our technology to enhance an experimental Nanosuit (which of course will require us to test Him ourselves, forcing us to fight crime). Imaginaréis I guess that has been working on this, secretly hoping that some of these things happen, and nothing. The superheroes still knocking on my door. But walking is not fun ...

The illustrious Dr. Emmet Brown. Without doubt, an example to follow.

Young bookworm Peter Parker is designed he alone a chemical mixture and a device to release it.
Powers aside, what a motivation to learn science!

Of course, science is not just molecular biology (jo, if even the name "molecular biology" cool, do not tell me no), and therefore the above in this (absurd) reflection is perfectly applicable other classic areas of biology, medicine, paleontology, chemistry, physics (just thinking about quantum theory, gravitons, particle accelerators ... and I shudder), and a long etc.. For I asked this via twitter some input and as a result I also got this other list Molona:

- elutriator
- strobe lamp
-
flow cytometer - Transilluminator
- Multipole magnetic / electric
- Spectral Lamp
- GC
- Ultraturrax
- Nanofiltration,
- Supercritical Fluid
- Accelerated Solvent
-
metastable states - creation and annihilation operators

Pass to tie all these concepts, some of them very mystical to me (what the creation and annihilation operators has left me heartbroken, really). Id like dwarfs googling and you will enjoy (thanks to fellow @ EoKr , @ kunzahe , @ _Argi_ , @ Noxbru and @ eliatron by these fascinating contributions).

I remind you that you can use comments to include other terms from different fields of knowledge, which only by their sound, strangeness, and Images that trigger on a malleable young mind can make itself exciting to engage in something as seemingly Peñaza and spend all day driving tiny tubes containing clear fluid.

And but for nothing, all working for the markets, that certainly there will always be curro.

But not so cool, that's for sure.
